Dev Doja is to tech and programming like a keyboard is to music and creating. Yet that just scratches the surface of who Dev Doja really is.
You want to know about Dev Doja but let me first give you background. My real name is Micah Dunson. I was born the youngest of five in Columbus, Ohio in 1979. Growing up in the outer suburbs as a kid in the ’80s in Ohio was great. It was a place that allowed me to experience being around nature and enjoying outdoor activities. Moving to California and living in inner-city Oakland in the late ’80s was a bit less enjoyable, to say the least, especially to a young naive child.
The start of the 90s we moved to Southern California to a city called Oxnard. It was in Oxnard that I realized my passion for music. I started playing bass guitar in 1992 when I received a Fender electric bass guitar for my birthday. From there I progressed to playing keyboard and eventually started producing music instrumentals for commercial licensing. In 1993 I started lyric and songwriting and continued to do such in private building up a rather large collection of material during my time in high school.
Despite my music passion, I had to put it on hold. After high school graduation in searching for a path in life I chose to enlist in the U.S. Military. Of all my life’s decisions I will never regret making that decision. It was more than a great experience, it was a growing moment. After I had served my time of enlistment I decided to try my luck in the civilian sector of the field I had worked in while enlisted. I soon found that option not to be a viable plan based partly on location and and partly on transportation.
With a little help I landed an opportunity to work in the healthcare field in the hospital. I soon found myself, with over 8 years in healthcare and at and the receiving end of a company layoff. With some encouragement from friends and family, I reluctantly decided to try my hand at performing the music I made. In 2008 I release my debut hip-hop album, The Rise lp. In 2012 I followed up with my second album, A.L.I.E.N. Language.
From 2008, the next 5 years was a pure mixture of late night studio sessions, show performances during all days of the week, creating new material, being in a relationship (with something other than music), and holding down a job in healthcare as a manager. From festivals and concerts to tours and open mics. I’ve had the pleasure of working with and sharing the stage alongside some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Like the time changes, so do people and the things that we enjoy sometimes. This was the time when the idea of blogging and Dev Doja first came into mind.
After a few months of this, I really felt the need for more human interaction. I had basically transformed into this hermit coder from this very social music artist that I once was. So to kill time I found a part time job with a tiny little company that just so happen to deal in the sports industry. This tiny company was by far the best job that I’ve held in my working life working in “corporate America” I must say, but that’s another story for another time. So even though the job and people there are absolutely amazing, the job itself is not my passion like coding is. So after working for them a few years I quit in May 2018. Since that time all I do now is travel and pick up freelance or seasonal jobs here and there.
As of June 1st, 2018 my wife, myself, and our awesome cat named “Wookie” have taken to the road to travel and explore as many national parks and cool spots in North America as we can. Getting to the point where we are today has been and will continue to be a process. Our current goal is when the winter comes you might us in Felicity, California. We make our way to the Ventura County beach area of California for spring and seasonal work. For the Summer through fall the goal is to travel from west to east coast, or wherever our hearts desire.
This is my life currently in a nutshell. I travel extensively, happy to say. I also have and find the time to work on client projects. Whether it’s a website being created, just some written content, or a private computer lesson, I’m always ready , willing and committed to my clients. And that my friends is what Dev Doja, what Micah Dunson is about.
